This downtown museum offers visitors an inside look at the life and career of O’Keeffe, the “Mother of American Modernism,” and you can take in everything from early watercolors to New Mexican landscapes on display at any of the museum’s rotating exhibitions. School or tour groups can also book tickets in advance. For smaller, private groups of 12 or less, your driver can drop you off on Johnson Street just outside the main building. Large charter bus groups can instead book a designated space to park or unload their passengers along East Alameda St. at New Mexico School for the Deaf. These designated motorcoach spaces are near several historical points, too. As you may imagine, if you’re heading to see the state’s legislature in action, then this neighborhood will likely be your destination. Aside from the historic capitol buildings and the state’s cultural centers like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, this area also offers free entertainment in the form of outdoor walking areas—one of which follows the course of the Acequia Madre, the city’s largest tributary or acequia (translated from Spanish as irrigation ditch). After enjoying nature, hop on over to Museum Hill and the district’s collection of four institutions.
Railroad District/Guadalupe District
For another scenic tour, hop on the Rail Runner Express at the Santa Fe Depot, or drive along the old train tracks at Railyard Park and Plaza.
